Purposes

Leadership is a key to the success of any organization. To succeed, an organization requires leaders with the vision and the skills to guide it through the treacherous waters of the complex environment in which we live. LEARN is based on a set of assumptions about what effective leadership is and what effective leaders do. LEARN is a tool to help leaders develop the skills they will need to succeed in this vital role.

Description

  • LEARN helps leaders improve their effectiveness. LEARN focuses on leadership behavior and how it is perceived. It allows leaders to assess how they are performing their various functions. These assessments let leaders think about how they may want to change, while the material in the LEARN Resource Network allows leaders to develop those skills best suited to their specific learning needs.
  • LEARN provides users with several tools to enhance learning: diagnostic and feedback tools, learning tools, and planning tools. The diagnostic and feedback tools help leaders identify areas they may want to enhance, the learning tools help individuals learn new ways of leading, while the planning tools help leaders create and implement an action plan. LEARN consists of several interrelated parts:
  • The LEARN Upward Feedback Questionnaire, a questionnaire consisting of a number of statements describing aspects of leadership behavior. Individuals evaluate current effectiveness in executing each of these behaviors, as well as how you need to be in order to be a better leader.
  • The LEARN Leadership Evaluation Report, which provides a summary analysis of the assessment data by leadership dimension. Users can examine: the mean response to each of the items on the questionnaire as well as the distribution of responses to each item; the five highest and the five lowest rated items; the implications of what each item and dimension measures; why the item is important to leadership effectiveness; how effective the individual is perceived to be and; most importantly, how you can go about increasing competence.
  • The LEARN Resource Network, a knowledge base concerning the practice and development of effective leadership behaviors.
