OPEN
Workshop
A Workshop for Diagnosing
Organizational Effectiveness
One of the prerequisites for initiating any kind of
organizational change is the availability of valid data that tells you where you are
relative to where you want to be. The Somerset Consulting Group, Inc. has developed
a tool for helping internal and external change agents in this crucial process of
analyzing where the organization is. This tool is called OPEN.
- OPEN is an integrated program which consists of
- A set of survey tools for assessing various aspects of the
organization
- A program for compiling and analyzing survey data
- A program which creates graphic displays of data for use in
providing feedback
- A framework for assessing need and for implementing change
at the appropriate level of the organization.
The OPEN Workshop teaches participants how to use the OPEN
tools for assessing organizations and how to use data to initiate and facilitate
organizational change. The specific goals of this three-day workshop are to
- Understand the nine-window model of organizational
effectiveness
- Use the OPENtm software
- Use survey tools for diagnosing organizational problems
- Use seven standardized surveys for analyzing aspects of the
organization
- Give feedback to organizational clients
Participants of the three-day event receive the OPEN
Training Manual and a license to purchase and use the OPEN software.

OPEN: Organization Performance
Excellence Network
The foundation of the quality improvement process is the
availability and use of data that tells you how the organization is doing relative to its
mission and strategic goals. Real improvement of quality is possible only in so far as the
organization:
- Understands the processes by which it provides products and
services to its (internal and external) customers, and
- Is able to improve and perfect these processes over time.
The Organization Performance Excellence
Network (OPENTM) is a collection of tools that enables organizations
and their clients to understand and perfect elements of the systems that are responsible
for creating and producing the products and services which form the core organizational
mission.
The OPENtm software allows users to efficiently collect,
organize, and feed data back into the system. The power of this software system lies in
the immediacy of the feedback and the power of a graphical interface into your data that
is easily understood by the participants. Imagine being able to collect survey data from
your people and have it ready to look at in just minutes. The OPENtm software allows a
change agent to gain the entire learning cycle from diagnosing a problem to action
planning to implementing change.

Developing and Managing Open Organizations offers a
theory-based approach to creating organizations that are both adaptable and stable,
sensitive to the needs of the constituents, and able to achieve goals productively. It is
useful to individuals who are interested in identifying and releasing organizational
potential.
This book describes the entire picture of a healthy
organization. In addition to a general framework for change, the book presents a
step-by-step model that may be used by any organization to:
- Clarify individual and organization values
- Define, prioritize, and achieve consensus on its goals
- Build trust and open communication in work units
- Build internal structures for on-going problem-solving
- Plan a management development program
- Evaluate progress
- A battery of over twenty diagnostic instruments, action
tools, and procedural checklists work hand-in-hand with chapters on action steps. These
are presented as resources for managers who want to develop a growth program appropriate
to the unique needs and opportunities of their organizations. Developing and Managing
Open Organizations provides a model and methods through which managers and
organization specialists can tap their organizations' wealth of
